Using these worksheets in teaching
The single most useful thing to establish here is that "average" names a family rather than a calculation: mean, median and mode are three answers to the same question, and the reason there are three is that they disagree in interesting ways. A worksheet cannot teach that on its own, but a mixed sheet gets close, because the work of a mixed sheet is reading which measure is wanted before reaching for a method — and children who have only met the mean will compute it for every row without noticing. Ordering the numbers is worth insisting on for the median even when the middle value looks obvious, because the habit is what survives to a set of nine. Range sits slightly apart: it measures spread rather than centre, and pointing that out once stops it being remembered as a fourth kind of average. When the class is ready for the real conversation, ask which measure a shopkeeper would want for shoe sizes — the mode is the only useful answer, and nobody forgets it afterwards.

- Do the means always come out whole?
- Yes, by construction rather than by luck. Each data set is built so that its total divides exactly by the number of values, so no answer key ever carries a recurring decimal. A child learning the method should be checking whether they added and divided correctly, not whether they rounded the way the marker did.
- Why are the sets always an odd size?
- So that the median is one of the numbers on the page. With five, seven or nine values the child orders the list and points at the middle one. An even set makes the median the mean of the two middle values — a different and later skill — and would put answers like 8.5 on a sheet whose other answers are whole numbers. Even sizes are not offered at all rather than offered and then special-cased.
- Is there always exactly one mode?
- Yes. Every set is built with a single most-common value, so "the mode" is never ambiguous and never absent. Sets with two modes and sets with none are both real and both worth discussing, but they belong in a conversation rather than on an answer key.
- Can I ask for just one measure?
- Yes — untick the rest. - Why does the answer key repeat the numbers for a median?
- Because ordering the list is the step being taught. A teacher marking "9" against "7, 12, 9, 12, 5" would otherwise have to sort the set by hand to see why, so the key prints the ordered version beside the answer.
