Using these worksheets in teaching

Reading a bar graph looks like one skill and is really three: tracking a bar across to the axis, working out what one gridline is worth, and then doing the arithmetic the question asks for. Children who look fluent on a graph numbered in ones often come apart when the axis steps in twos, which is why the maximum value is worth changing deliberately rather than leaving alone — the moment a bar ends between two printed numbers is the moment the scale has to be understood rather than read. The comparison questions are where the real learning sits: "how many more" is a subtraction that a child must first decide to perform, and getting the two bars the right way round is a more common error than the subtraction itself. Ask a child to say what the graph is about before answering anything, because a surprising number of mistakes come from answering the arithmetic correctly for the wrong bar. When the reading is secure, have them collect their own data — a tally of eye color or favorite fruit around the classroom — and draw the graph themselves: making one is what fixes the idea that the height of a bar is a count of something real.

What do the questions ask?
Reading a single bar, finding the tallest and the shortest, comparing two bars for a difference, identifying the bar with an exact value, and totaling the whole graph. A question is only ever printed when the data makes it answerable — there is no "which had the most?" on a graph with two bars tied at the top.
Where does the data come from?
The values are drawn at random within the axis you set, and the category names come from four authored word sets: fruit, pets, colors and sports. Every answer is recomputed from the drawn values when the key is built rather than stored alongside them, so the key cannot drift from the graph.
What does the maximum value change?
The height of the axis and the size of the steps. With 10, every gridline is one unit and a child counts up the axis directly. With 20, the gridlines and the numbers go up in twos, which is where reading a bar that ends between two labels starts to be a real skill.
Why is there only one graph per sheet?
Because two graphs on a page halve the height of the bars, and the bar height is precisely the thing being read. A short bar graph teaches a child to guess at the value rather than track it across to the axis, which is the opposite of the point. Print two sheets instead.
