Using these worksheets in teaching
A certificate does its work when it names the thing the child actually did. "For outstanding achievement" is pleasant and forgettable; "for reading to the class every Friday, even the hard words" is kept in a drawer for years, because the child can see they were being watched at the moment it mattered. That is why the reason is a free line rather than a menu — write the sentence you would say out loud. Award effort and habits rather than ability wherever you can: a child cannot repeat being clever, but they can repeat trying again after getting it wrong, and a certificate is one of the few pieces of feedback that goes home and gets read by someone else.
