Using these worksheets in teaching

The hundred square is the most-used piece of paper in an elementary math classroom, and most of its value comes from moving on it rather than reading it. One right is one more; one down is ten more; the whole of adding and subtracting ten becomes a vertical move rather than a calculation, and children who have internalized that stop counting in ones. Shading the multiples turns the chart into a pattern-finding task: the fives make stripes, the tens a single column, the nines a diagonal that walks one place left each row, and the question worth asking is always "why does it lean?" rather than "what comes next?". The 0–99 layout is worth trying if the tens boundary is causing trouble, because it puts every multiple of ten at the start of its own row. Laminate one, hand out counters, and use it for far longer than you would expect to.

Which range should I print?
1–100 is the classic hundred square. 0–99 starts each row on the multiple of ten, so 20 sits at the head of its row instead of the end of the previous one — which makes the tens structure much clearer and is why many schemes prefer it. 1–120 extends past a hundred, which is where the "what comes after 109" confusion lives.
What does shading multiples do?
It shades every cell whose number is a multiple of the one you choose, so shading 5 paints two vertical stripes and shading 3 paints diagonals. Seeing the shape is the point: the pattern is the count, and children spot the next number from the picture before they can say it.
Why is zero shaded on the 0–99 chart?
Because zero is a multiple of every number, and shading it is exactly how skip-counting from zero is taught — the count reads 0, 5, 10, 15 rather than starting halfway into the first row.
Is there an answer key?
