Rounding worksheet generator

Print rounding practice at exactly the level you need: choose whether numbers are rounded to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000, how long the numbers are, and whether each question comes with a small number line to mark the halfway point on. Download a US Letter or A4 PDF with the answer key.

Choose what to round to and how long the numbers are, preview the sheet, then download the PDF.

Quick presets

Numbers that are already exact multiples are left out: every question on the sheet genuinely moves. Halfway numbers are kept, and round up.

How it works

  1. Choose the rounding target — nearest 10, 100 or 1000 — and how many digits the numbers have.
  2. Turn the number-line hints on while the rule is being taught, and off for fluency practice.
  3. Download the PDF, print it, or copy a share link that restores these settings.

Using these worksheets in teaching

Rounding is taught as a rule about the digit to the right and understood as a question about a number line, and the gap between those two things is where the mistakes live. A child who has only learned "five or more, round up" will round 4 851 to 4 000 to the nearest thousand — the digit rule was applied to the wrong place, and nothing in the rule itself flags that as absurd. Ask instead which two multiples the number sits between and which one it is nearer, and the same child gets it right without a rule at all. That is what the number-line hint is for: use it while the idea is being built, then withdraw it, because a scaffold that stays becomes the method. Two things are worth being deliberate about. Halfway numbers need a convention, and it needs stating out loud — 45 is genuinely no nearer to 40 than to 50, and we round it up by agreement, not by fact. And rounding to a target that is bigger than the numbers, which this generator refuses to print, is worth doing once on a whiteboard so a child sees why it is a silly question rather than merely a forbidden one.

Frequently asked questions

Which rounding rule is used?
Round half up: a number exactly halfway between two multiples rounds to the larger one, so 45 rounds to 50 and 250 rounds to 300. Halfway numbers are kept in deliberately rather than avoided — they are the questions a child most needs to have met.
Why are some combinations refused?
Because they have no answers worth practicing. Rounding two-digit numbers to the nearest 1000 has one possible answer for the whole sheet, and to the nearest 100 it has two — that is a definition being recited, not a skill. The page says so rather than printing a page of the same answer.
Are numbers that are already round included?
No. “Round 340 to the nearest 10” teaches a child that rounding sometimes does nothing, which is true and is not what the exercise is for, so exact multiples are left out of the pool. Every question on the sheet genuinely moves.
What do the number-line hints do?
They draw a short line under each question with the two nearest multiples at either end and the halfway point marked, so the child can put the number on the line and see which end it is nearer. It is a scaffold for teaching the idea, so it is off by default and worth turning off again once the rule is secure.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. Turn it on and every answer is listed in question order on a labelled page at the end of the same PDF.
