Using these worksheets in teaching
A word ladder is phonics practice disguised as a puzzle, and its value is in the constraint: because only one letter may change, the child has to attend to individual sounds and positions rather than recognizing a whole word by its outline. That is exactly the skill that separates a reader who decodes from a reader who guesses, and it transfers directly to spelling — a child who can move from HAT to TOP a letter at a time is manipulating phonemes, not memorizing strings. Read the clue aloud with a child who is stuck rather than giving the word: the clue names the meaning, and the constraint does the rest of the work. Short ladders first, and expect the middle rungs to be much harder than the ends, because both ends are given and the middle is where two constraints meet. Once a child solves ladders comfortably, ask them to write one: building a valid chain is considerably harder than solving it, and it makes the one-letter rule impossible to hold loosely.
