Spelling worksheet generator
Turn this week's spelling list into a printable missing-letter worksheet. Type up to 20 words, choose how many letters to remove from each, keep the first letter visible as a scaffold, and print an optional word bank above the questions. Download the result as a US Letter or A4 PDF with an answer key.
Paste your spelling list, preview the worksheet instantly, then download the PDF — no account needed.
How it works
- Type or paste your word list, one word per line.
- Choose how many letters to remove, whether to keep the first letter, and whether to print a word bank.
- Download the PDF with the answer key, or copy a share link that restores these settings.
Using these worksheets in teaching
Filling in missing letters sits between copying a word and writing it from memory: enough of the word is on the page to keep a struggling speller in the task, but the letters that carry the pattern still have to be recalled. The settings are the difficulty dial — word bank on with one letter missing is a warm-up, word bank off with three letters missing is a test. Run the same list twice in a week with different settings, and press regenerate so the blanked positions move rather than being memorized along with the word.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I use my own spelling list?
- Yes. Type or paste up to 20 words, one per line. Spaces and punctuation are removed, so each entry becomes a single word of letters.
- How many letters are removed?
- One, two or three per word, whichever you choose. Short words always keep at least one letter visible, so a three-letter word never turns into three blanks.
- What does the word bank do?
- It prints every word once, shuffled, in a box above the questions. Leave it on while a list is new and turn it off for the end-of-week check.
- Why keep the first letter?
- The opening letter is the strongest retrieval cue in spelling: keeping it visible turns the task from guessing into recalling the rest of the pattern. Turn it off once a list is secure.
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. The answer key is added as a clearly labeled page at the end of the same PDF, numbered to match the questions.
