Using these worksheets in teaching

A number line is the first picture of number that survives into the rest of math: it carries negatives, fractions, decimals and eventually the real line, so time spent making it feel like a measured road rather than a row of labels pays off for years. The two styles here answer different questions. Missing numbers checks that a child can use the structure — the ends are given, so the gaps can be reasoned about from either side. Count by removes that scaffold and exposes whether skip-counting is genuinely fluent or is a chant that only works from zero, which is why a child who counts fives perfectly from 0 can stall completely when the line starts at 35. Start with ones and a fixed 0–10 line, move the start before you move the step, and say the count aloud while pointing at the ticks: the jump has to feel like a distance, not a word in a list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the two question styles?

Missing numbers labels both ends of the line plus two ticks in between and leaves empty boxes above the rest, so the child works inwards from what they can see. Count by labels only the first two ticks, which turns the line into skip-counting from a running start — much harder, and the better check of whether the count is fluent rather than recited.

How long is each line?

Every line has eleven ticks and ten intervals, so it spans exactly ten steps: 0–10 in ones, 0–20 in twos, 0–50 in fives, 0–100 in tens. Keeping the tick count fixed means the line stays legible at every step size and the boxes stay big enough to write in.

What does randomising the start do?

It gives each line on the page a different starting number, so a sheet of counting in fives might run 35–85 on one line and 120–170 on the next. Switch it off and every line starts at the number you set — useful when you want one fixed line practised repeatedly, such as 0 to 100 in tens.

Why does it say there are not enough different questions?

Because with a fixed start and the count-by style there is literally one possible line, and the preview says so rather than printing the same line six times. Either switch randomised starts on, change to missing numbers — which has 36 different label patterns on any one line — or allow repeats.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Turn it on and every blank is listed in order on clearly labeled pages at the end of the same PDF, so the sheet can be graded without working the lines out again.
