ABC order worksheet generator
Sets of words to rewrite in alphabetical order, with a ruled line for each. Choose animals, food or school things, or paste your own spelling list, and choose whether every word in a set starts with a different letter — the easier task — or whether they share a first letter so the ordering has to be settled on the second. Download a US Letter or A4 PDF with the answer key.
Pick a word list and how hard you want the ordering, preview the sheet, then download the PDF.
Every word in a set starts with a different letter, so the first letter is enough to order them. The gentler of the two.
How it works
- Choose animals, food, school things, or paste your own words.
- Set how many sets per sheet, how many words per set, and whether the words share a first letter.
- Download the PDF, print it, or copy a share link that restores these settings.
Using these worksheets in teaching
Alphabetical order looks like a filing skill and is really a lesson in comparing sequences one position at a time — the same reasoning a child later applies to place value and, much later, to sorting anything at all. The first-letter version is a warm-up; the work happens the moment the first letters match and the child has to hold "same so far" in mind and move along. Give them the alphabet on the wall or on the desk rather than expecting recall, because reciting the alphabet and knowing whether p comes before s are different skills and only the second one is being taught here. A productive habit to insist on: write the set out with a finger on the alphabet strip, find the earliest letter first, cross it off the source list, repeat — it converts an intimidating whole-set problem into a sequence of small ones. Once shared-first-letter sets are comfortable, a real dictionary or an index is the natural next step, and the transfer is immediate in a way that few worksheet skills are.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between the two modes?
- Different first letters means every word in a set begins with its own letter, so the child orders on the first letter alone. Shared first letter means the whole set begins with the same one — badger, bat, bear, bee, bison — so the first letter settles nothing and the ordering has to be decided on the second. They are the same worksheet at two difficulties, and the second is the one that actually teaches alphabetising.
- Can I use my own spelling list?
- Yes. Choose "My own words" and type up to 20 words, one per line. They are reduced to letters and lowercased on the way to the page — the same treatment every word-puzzle generator here gives a typed list — so anything with a space, a hyphen or an apostrophe will not survive as typed. Words longer than 15 letters are rejected rather than truncated, because the writing line runs out.
- What if my list cannot fill the sheet?
- The sheet says so and names the numbers. It never pads a set by repeating a word or quietly prints fewer sets than you asked for: if twelve words cannot make four sets of five with different first letters, the message tells you how many letters your words actually use and which setting to change. That honesty matters most in the shared-first-letter mode, where a list needs whole clusters of words rather than just enough words.
- Are the words ever printed already in order?
- No. Each set is shuffled and checked against its own answer before printing, and reshuffled if it came out alphabetical — a set that is already the answer is not a question.
- What is in the three word lists?
- Thirty-five everyday words each, over fifteen starting letters: five clusters of five words sharing a letter, plus ten singletons. That shape is what lets a whole sheet print in either mode without repeating a word. All three lists avoid words spelled differently in Australia, Britain and the United States, so one sheet reads correctly everywhere.
- Which paper sizes are supported?
- US Letter and A4, laid out for each rather than scaled: the number of sets that fit on a page is computed from the paper you choose.
