Using these worksheets in teaching

A spelling crossword is a letter-by-letter exercise wearing a puzzle’s clothes. Because there are no clues, the student is never being asked to retrieve the word — it is printed in the bank in front of them — so the whole of the task is orthographic: count the squares, match the length, then make each crossing letter agree with the word running through it. That last step is what an ordinary word search cannot do, and it is why a word spelled almost right will not fit. Run the same list twice in a week and press regenerate between them, so the grid changes and the sheet cannot be solved from memory of where the words went. Turn the first-letter hints on while a list is new and off for the end-of-week check.

  • Do I have to write clues?

    No — that is the point of this maker. You type the words and nothing else. The clue is the shape of the grid itself: a student reads the word bank, counts the squares, and works out which word fits where. If you want written clues, use the crossword maker instead.

  • How does a student solve it without clues?

    From the word bank and the letter counts. Every word appears once in the shuffled bank under the grid, so the task is to fit each one into an entry of the right length and then to make the crossings agree — which is a spelling exercise rather than a general-knowledge one.

  • Can I turn the word bank off?

    No. With no clues on the page the bank is the only way in, so it always prints. If you want a harder sheet, switch the first-letter hints off and choose the smallest squares; if you want an easier one, switch the hints on.

  • Why does it say a word could not be fitted?

    Every word after the first has to cross one already on the grid, sharing a letter in a position that is still free. A word whose letters appear nowhere else in your list has no legal place, so it is named in a notice instead of being forced in. Add a word that shares a letter with it, or press regenerate to try a different arrangement — the puzzle without it still prints and is still valid.

  • How many words can I use?

    Between 2 and 20, up to 15 letters each after spaces and punctuation are removed. A weekly list of eight to twelve interlocks well and still leaves the squares big enough to write in.

  • Is there an answer key?

    Yes. The completed grid prints on a second page of the same PDF, so you can check the sheet without solving it yourself.
