Using these worksheets in teaching

Money is one of the few genuinely everyday uses of arithmetic, and it exercises several skills at once: reading the value of each piece, adding unlike amounts, and subtracting to find change. Start with coins only and the smallest amount cap so the counting stays concrete, then add notes. Change questions are harder than they look — most students find counting up from the cost to the amount paid easier than formal subtraction, so it is worth teaching that strategy explicitly. Keep real or plastic coins on the desk for anyone still learning the values.

Which coins and notes are used?
The cash that actually circulates in the currency you choose. Australian dollars start at 5c and totals are rounded to the nearest 5c, exactly as cash payments are rounded in Australia; US dollars include the 1c, 5c, 10c and 25c coins; pounds sterling run from 1p to the £50 note; euros from 1c to the €100 note. The page opens on the currency for your country, and you can change it at any time.
What is the difference between counting and change?
A counting question shows a set of pieces — for example 3 × 50c + 2 × 20c — and asks for the total. A change question gives the cost and the amount paid and asks for the change. Mixed mode prints both kinds on one worksheet.
Can I keep it to coins only?
Yes. Turn on coins only and no note appears anywhere on the sheet, including the amount paid in a change question — those are paid with coins, so the cost stays below the largest coin in your chosen currency. It suits early counting while the coin values themselves are still being learnt.
How large do the amounts get?
You choose the cap: 5, 10, 20 or 50 in the major unit of your currency — dollars, pounds or euros. The smallest cap keeps the arithmetic within reach while students are still learning what each piece is worth. With coins only, change questions stay below the largest coin instead, so that a coin can always pay for the purchase.
Is there an answer key?
