Using these worksheets in teaching

A vocabulary crossword asks for something a matching exercise does not: the student reads the definition, retrieves the term, and then has to spell it into a fixed number of squares with every crossing letter agreeing. That last step is what turns recognition into recall — a term a class can pick out of a list is not yet a term they can produce. Use it as the second pass over a unit’s words rather than the first, once the definitions have been met at least once, and print the word bank for a class meeting the terms for the second time and no bank for the third.

  • How is this different from the crossword maker?

    Mechanically it is the same puzzle; what differs is the job and the wording around it. The crossword maker asks for an answer and a clue, which is what a puzzle setter writes. This page asks for a term and a definition, which is what is already in a teacher’s vocabulary list — so a list written for a spelling test or a glossary can be pasted straight in without rewriting it as clues. There is also no word-count control here: a vocabulary list is the list, not a pool to sample from, so every pair you type is in the puzzle.

  • Do I have to write a definition for every term?

    No. Leave the pipe off a line and the letter count is printed in its place, so a list of terms can be typed first and defined later. A term with no definition still gets a numbered entry and still crosses the others — it just gives the class less to go on.

  • What makes a good definition for a crossword clue?

    One that identifies the term without containing it. “The force that pulls objects toward the Earth” works; “gravity force” does not, because the answer is printed inside its own clue. Keep it to a line — the clue lists are set in two columns by default, so a definition longer than about a hundred characters starts to crowd the page.

  • Can I use the same list for more than one sheet?

    Yes, and it is worth doing. Press regenerate and the same terms interlock into a different grid, so a class that saw the puzzle on Monday cannot solve Friday’s from memory of where the words went. Turn the word bank and the first-letter hints on for the first pass and off for the second.

  • Why does it say a term could not be fitted?

    Every term after the first has to cross one already on the grid, sharing a letter in a position that is still free. A term whose letters appear nowhere else in your list has no legal place, so it is named in a notice rather than forced in. Add a term that shares a letter with it, or press regenerate to try a different arrangement — the puzzle without it still prints and is still valid.

  • Is there an answer key?

    Yes. The completed grid prints on a second page of the same PDF, so you can mark the sheet without solving it yourself.
