A snowflake is a lesson in symmetry a child can hold: one cut becomes twelve, and the pattern that appears on unfolding shows rotation and reflection at once. Why does it have six points and not eight?
Real snowflakes have six. Folding a square in half twice gives eight layers and an eight-pointed shape; folding the last triangle into three instead gives twelve layers and six points. The steps and the template both follow the six-point fold.
What paper works best?
Thin paper — printer paper or origami paper. The square must be at least as wide as the snowflake, so a 15 cm origami square makes the small or medium one, and the large needs a 17 cm square cut from A4 or Letter. Card is too thick to cut once it is folded into twelve layers.
Which cutting level should we choose?
Start with easy: large shapes and few cuts. The fold never changes, so a child who has made the easy snowflake only needs steadier scissors for the detailed one.
Do we have to use the template?
No. It shows where to cut for a snowflake like the picture, but any cut into the folded edges makes a snowflake. Most children carry on freehand once they have made one.
Is it safe for young children?
The cutting needs an adult nearby. Twelve layers of folded paper are thick, and children push harder on scissors when the paper resists — which is why the sheet says so.
