How it works

Cut out six pieces, fold a three-sided body and a nose cone, and glue on three fins and the flames: a rocket that stands up on its own. The template prints every piece at true size, with solid lines to cut, dashed lines to fold and the glue tabs shaded grey, and the steps show each part going on as a picture.

A paper rocket turns flat shapes into a solid a child can hold: three rectangles fold into a prism and three triangles into a pyramid, and watching a net become a shape is the start of understanding 3D geometry. Folding on a line and gluing a tab build fine motor control, and following six numbered steps in order is a small lesson in reading instructions.

  • What do we need?

    Scissors, a glue stick and the printed sheet. Printer paper works; slightly heavier paper, up to about 160 gsm, makes a rocket that stands more firmly.

  • Why does it have three sides?

    Three sides make the simplest tube that stands up by itself, and one fin on each side balances it. A round tube would have to be rolled and taped, which is much harder for young hands than folding on a line.

  • The rocket will not stand up. What can we do?

    Check that each fin is glued at the very bottom of its side, so all three feet reach the table together, and that the flames are glued far enough up inside not to touch it.

  • How tall is each size?

    Small stands 9 cm tall, medium 13 cm and large 17 cm, from the tip of the nose to the feet of the fins. Every piece prints at true size on one A4 or US Letter page.

  • Is it suitable for five-year-olds?

    Yes, with an adult nearby. The pieces are large and the cuts are mostly straight; the nose cone’s small tabs are the fiddliest part, and an adult can help fold those.
