Using these worksheets in teaching
A pictograph is the first graph most children meet, and it is deceptively easy while the key is 1: counting pictures is not data handling, it is counting. The learning starts at a key of 2, where the number of symbols and the answer to the question stop being the same number, and a child who has been reading picture graphs happily for a year suddenly answers 4 to a row of four symbols worth 8. That error is worth expecting rather than correcting in passing — ask what the key says before any question is answered, every time, until it becomes the first thing they look at. Half symbols are the second step and they are genuinely harder: a small symbol under a key of 10 is 5, which requires halving, and a child who reads it as "one more" is telling you something useful about their grasp of the key rather than their arithmetic. When the reading is fluent, turn it round and have them draw one: given a tally of eye colour and a key of 2, deciding how to show seven is the moment the whole idea lands.

- What does the key change?
- Everything about the difficulty. With a key of 1, reading the graph and answering the question are the same act — count the symbols. With 2, 5 or 10, every answer needs a multiplication after the counting, which is the whole point of a scaled pictograph and the step most children need practice at.
- Are there half symbols?
- Only when the key is an even number, and then a half symbol is drawn smaller and named in the key line — “a small circle = 1” under a key of 2. Half of an odd key is not a whole thing, so keys of 1 and 5 draw whole symbols only rather than asking a child to count half a pet.
- Where does the data come from?
- The values are drawn at random within what fits the row, and the row names come from four authored word sets: fruit, pets, colours and sports. Every answer is recomputed from the drawn values when the key is built, so the key cannot drift from the graph.
- Is it the same data as the bar chart generator?
- It is the same set of survey themes, so a class can be given the same survey drawn two ways — as a bar chart on one sheet and a pictograph on another. The values themselves are drawn per sheet, so the two are not copies of each other unless you set them up to be.
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. Turn it on and every answer is listed in question order on a labelled page at the end of the same PDF.
