Using these worksheets in teaching

Area and perimeter are taught together and confused constantly, and the confusion is almost never about arithmetic — it is about which question was asked. The grid here is deliberate: while area is squares to count and perimeter is a distance to walk, the two stay different kinds of thing, and the moment they collapse into "length times width" and "add up the sides" is the moment a child starts choosing between two formulas by guessing. Start with both measurements of the same shape so the two numbers sit side by side and are visibly answers to different questions. Move to L-shapes as soon as rectangles are comfortable: they are where the counting has to become a strategy — split it into two rectangles, or count the full rectangle and take the notch away — and where a child who has only memorised a formula quietly stops. Ask often for two different shapes with the same area, or the same perimeter, and let the class find them; that discovery does more for the distinction than any amount of re-explaining.

What is the difference between the four question styles?
Area asks only for the area, perimeter only for the perimeter. Both prints two answer slots under one shape, which is the version that exposes the classic confusion — a child who has swapped the two has to write both numbers down beside each other. Mixed alternates single area and perimeter questions down the sheet, so the child has to read what is being asked each time rather than settling into one procedure.
What are the L-shapes for?
A rectangle can be answered by multiplying two numbers, which is why a class can look fluent and still not know what area is. An L-shape has no formula to reach for: the area has to be counted or split into two rectangles, and the perimeter has to be walked all the way round. They are the questions that tell you whether the idea landed.
What units do the answers use?
Plain units and square units, counted off the grid. That keeps a sheet honest in every locale — no centimetres, no inches — and it keeps the focus on what area and perimeter measure rather than on converting between units, which is a separate lesson.
How many shapes fit on a page?
