Using these worksheets in teaching
A line plot is the cheapest honest graph there is: it needs no scale to work out, no bars to draw and no key to remember, so the whole of a child’s attention goes on what the data actually looks like. That is its real value — a stack of five Xs over one number and nothing at all over its neighbours is a shape, and children see shapes long before they can talk about distributions. Ask what the plot tells you before asking any of the printed questions. The range question is the one worth dwelling on, because it is the first time most children meet a single number that describes a whole set rather than one member of it, and “from the lowest to the highest” is a sentence they can say long before “range” means anything. The halves scale is where the arithmetic gets real: a difference of one and a half is a genuine subtraction, and a child who has only ever plotted whole numbers will often round it away. Best of all, a line plot can be built from data the class collected ten minutes ago — hand spans, shoe sizes, how many pets — and building one is what makes reading one obvious.

- Is this the same thing as a dot plot?
- Yes. “Line plot” is the term used in the American curriculum and “dot plot” is more usual in Australia and Britain, but they name the identical thing: one mark per measurement, stacked above the value it belongs to. This page prints marks as X, which is the commonest convention in both.
- What does the halves scale do?
- It numbers the line 0 to 5 in halves rather than 0 to 10 in whole numbers, so measurements land on marks like 2½. This is the form the measurement standard asks for — measure to the nearest half unit and show the data on a line plot — and it makes the questions genuinely harder, because differences are now halves too.
- Why is there no unit on the axis?
- Because there is no unit that is right everywhere: a sheet labelled “inches” is wrong in an Australian classroom and one labelled “centimetres” is wrong in an American one, and the mathematics of reading the plot is identical either way. The line carries numbers only, and the teacher says what they are measuring.
- How many measurements are plotted?
- Between 9 and 15 — enough for a shape to show and few enough that the tallest stack still fits above the line. The values are drawn so that the plot always has a real spread and a question about the most common value always has one answer.
- Is there an answer key?
